Let's introduce you now to some of the on-air talent at WKW

My mistake the Skyliners were at #35, not 36, down from #30. Sarah Vaughn checks in with a jazz standard, Maybe's It's Because at #34 and here's the number 33 song by the Browns, the classic 'Scarlet Ribbons.'Let 's send this one out to big Jim Ed, leader of the Browns, who recently passed https://youtu.be/0qq-eX47JtY

We're doing our weekly HOMETOWN COUNTDOWN here in Oldies Country, this week featuring the great WKW, St. Louis for this week in 1959.

We're up to number 32 where Kitty Kalen is keeping her same spot from last week with 'If I Gave My Heart To You.' But before we go on let's hear an extra from this week from a group you'd never expect to make the Pop Charts, but then, again, that's why music during the Golden Era '50s and '60s is so interesting... you've got a little bit of everything. And here's that group, the MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR - no foolin' - with 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' https://youtu.be/vlAbqeQ7qE8

COMING UP #31 If you're enjoying our new countdown show please give our page a LIKE (at the top) and tell your friends... We try to do it most Saturday nights. By the way have you noticed how music changed drastically from the 50s and 60s to, say , the 1980s, and since then while there've been great advances in technology and all music hasn't changed much since then - which doesn't say a lot... Sorry for the aside... We're back in business now with the No 31 song on WKW's Hot 38 with 'Smokie Part 2' from Bill Black'sCombo... and here's a treat..the video footage of the group performing the song in a 1961 movie 'TEENAGE MILLIONAIRE'https://youtu.be/Lm_xBHCtubM

The Bill Black's Combo's performance of Smokie Part 2 and Yogi in the motion picture "Teenage…

Speaking of Dinah Washington did you know that she did a nice ballad written by Neil Sedaka, purportedly in 1959, that never saw the light of day, to our knowledge, until it appeared on a compilation album in 1989, And, here it is , a Countdown Extra, 'Never Again'https://youtu.be/ojD0AinQDo0

HOMETOWN COUNTDOWN #30 NEXT UP - Rock and Roll is softening a bit with the fade of pioneer rockers like Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis and the loss of Buddy Holly in Feb. plane crash. But some very beautiful 'standards' like this #30 song from Dinah Washingon

Unforgettable is a popular song written by Irving Gordon. The song's original working title was Uncomparable. The music publishing company…

COUNTDOWN EXTRA - Well that was a first, to have two different artists each checking in at #25 with their version of the same song, The Hunch, which by the way hasn't done well nationally. Perhaps a regional hit... We talked about Buddy Holly and how his tragic loss earlier this year (1959) has left a void along with the legal problems and resutlting quietude from upbeat rockers Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, not to mention Elvis' musical sabatical in the Army. But Holly was already softening his tune with beautiful ballads like this one, that somehow escaped the U.S. charts last year (1958) or ever, 'True Love Ways' - probably because it only came out, on an album, in Marcy of 1959 after Holly's passing -https://youtu.be/QjFRHIhSvwc

This beautiful song was written by Buddy Holly (though also credited to Norman Petty) and recorded with the Ray Ellis orchestra on October 21, 1958, at the P...

That was #26 for Bill Haley and his sax man in front and now for #25 we've got an unual situation. Two different Versions of the same song, a little instrumental thing called THE HUNCH, one by Paul Gayten and the other by Bobby Peterson. But, let's listen now to #24, an instrumental from Santo and Johnny called 'Teardrop.' https://youtu.be/yhaReVCrS_8

Back to the survey #28, down one notch for Ray Smith, telling us 'That s' All Right,.'not to be confused with the earlier Bo Diddley tune, 'She's Alright. #27 is Tony Fisher's big ballad, replete with phaser, 'The Big Hurt' and #26 is a new one from Bill Haley and his Comets, an instrumental called 'Joey's Song, no doubt named for Comet sax player Joey D'Ambrosio who solo's here.

Charted at #46 on Billboard Hot 100 in October 1959. The Comets were nearing the end of their chart career by the time this song charted. Original…

Well what we're missing in the rocking numbers 1959 sure seems to make up with in the beautiful ballads. Peterson's Goodnight My Love only peaked at #64 nationally on Billboard and the other current version out by R & B singer Jesse Belvin has missed the charts completely but hit #7 on the R & B Billboard charts. Let 's hear that equally beautiful ballad . The song was originally released on a 78 on the Modern label out of Los Angeles https://youtu.be/gWhZXa-JCco
