NEIL DIAMOND'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Weekend - Five Decades of Hits!

Early live performance of 'Cherry Cherry' (1966) in stereo!

Live performance of 'Holly Holy,' a song Diamond admitted that he wrote, trying to capture the Roy orbison big ballad sound. The song hit #8 in 1969, one of seven top 10
singles.

Diamond does a pretty fair cover of the Drifter's 'Save the Last Dance for Me' on his Brill building covers
album

A rare treat, Neil Diamond's first-ever recording, 'Million Miles Away' 1958

NEIL DIAMOND'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Weekend - Five Decades of Hits!

Neil Diamond was recording music as early as 1958, yet his career didn't get on track until the mid-60s with 'Solitary Man'   his  breakout hit in 1966*, quickly followed up with guitar-based rockers 'Cherry Cherry' and 'Thank the Lord for the Nighttime.'  Diamond hit in country with 'Kentucky Woman' and his first ballad 'Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon' all in the 60s before changing his tune, somewhat, with the times in later decades. Yet, he always  included rock and roll including his album of Brill Building covers in the 1990s. In fact, Diamond was a Brill Building song writer, himself, writing hits for the Monkees (I'm A Believer') and others but it wasn't until the late 60s  until anything stuck.
*  'Solitary man' really didn't become the big hit   until 1970 when it re-emerged on the charts at #21, up from #55 in 1966 - a rare feat for a song to not only chart twice but reach higher position the second time around!

Neil Diamond is one of those rare artists who, despite changing times and sounds  has, consistently, maintained his fan base for decades. His concerts have always and continue to sell out to this day. Even when his records didn't well, Diamond was one of the top acts and  Diamond   returned to the charts in a big way in recent years, garnering his first No 1 album in decades under the direction of Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash and others).  Modern music critics, led by Rolling Stone, has feasted on crticising   Diamond  him as a lightweight , a sequined nostalgia act - much as they did Roy Orbison before his comeback, yet Diamond has been covered often by contemporary artists  and his 'Sweet Caroline' has become the 'Seventh inning stretch' song for Boston Red Sox  and several other Sports teams (see below).  In his 'comeback' album, Brian Wilson duetted with Diamond on 'Delirious Love,' a top 40 hit in 2006.

  • He attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York, where he sang in the All City Choir with Barbra Streisand. The pair went on to record heartache ballad You Don't Bring Me Flowers.
  • A longtime back pain sufferer, he had a tumor surgically removed from his spine just before he started shooting "The Jazz Singer" in 1979.
  • He won a fencing scholarship to New York University and was a member of the 1960 NCAA men's championship team.
  • Artists who have recorded Neil Diamond songs include Elvis PresleyDeep Purple, Lulu, Cliff Richard, The Monkees, UB40, Johnny Cash and Smash Mouth.
  • John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline was the inspiration for his hit "Sweet Caroline". Diamond revealed he wrote the anthem after seeing her on the cover of Life Magazine in an equestrian riding outfit.
  • "Sweet Caroline" is played during the 8th inning at every Boston Red Sox home game - even though Diamond is a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The song is also played during the 8th inning of every New York Mets home game and at Washington Nationals home games. Ice hockey team the New York Rangers have also adapted it as their own, and play it when they are winning at the end of the 3rd period.
  • Diamond became the first-ever winner of a Worst Actor Golden Raspberry Award in 1980 for "The Jazz Singer". He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the same role.
  • Famous for wearing colorful, sequin-adorned shirts in concert, Diamond claims he first came up with the idea so everyone in the audience could see him without the aid of binoculars. The Bill Whitten-designed and made shirts cost approximately US$5,000 each. Whitten designed and made the shirts for Diamond from the 1970s until 2007.
  • Among his many accolades, the Grammy Award winner and 12-time nominee is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors bestowed upon songwriters. He was the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2009.
  • Diamond has sold more than 128 million records worldwide.

'I have devils inside of me I'm my own worst enemy.'Phil Spector

It Must Be Something for PHIL SPECTOR to have his Birthday celebration one day after his famous Christmas album gets played all over the place at Chrstimas. Of course, these days Spector languishes in jail, probably not able to really appreciate much of anything . You can hear that album in its entirty by scrolling further down this site. It's just sad that a man of his talent  had to have   mental  issues get in the way of  a fully successful  and happy life.  See the 'Agony and Ecstacy of Phil Spector,'the only real  in depth interview with the man, filmed just  shortly before the trial, pershps five years ago. You get a glimpse of a realitvely 'normal;' involved and engaging personality.  These rare interviews were done, no doubt in  Spector's attempt to exohnerate himelf before the trial .
Here's a trailer for 'Agony and Exstatcy'followed by a 2005 interview film, apparently produced by the wife of the great Wrecking Crew (Spector's )  drummer form the Wall of Sound days, Michelle Blaine  In the second film, we hear Rachelle Spector, Phil;'s wife chiming in from time to time.

MORE  PHIL SPECTOR -

Meet His Wife and Why She Believes Spector is Innocent plus

Note Spector's offer of $100,000  to take a polygraph test to any of the women in testimony who claim Spector threatened their lives.

...and an HBO documentary film about Phll Spector, another apparentl attempt to exhonerate Spector, which came under controversy from both sides , for and against Spector's verdict

This trailer from 'PHIL SPECTOR' sums up the film pretty well... listen closely to the words. Now you don't need to watch it, unless your'e a big Phil Spector fan, as I am. All I can say is it's too bad he ever met Laura Clarkson

Re PHIL SPECTOR movie last nite, Interesting and sad how Spector's life is now in prison and while others, perhaps more guilty , like Robert Blake and Robert Wagner, are free - probably because they are more agreeable people..So much for US jury system and innocent until proven guilty....the public may have bee ready to finally put away a celebrity, especially one like Spector, after letting so many go free , eg OJ, Blake...

Movie could have been a lot better, perhaps with planned Bette Midler as attorney. Knowing Spector's genius music producing I wanted to like him and did to some extent. Would have liked to see more background footage of his difficult yet positive past. Http://oldiescountry.com

Dean Martin

Singer / Actor
Born: 7 June 1917
Died: 25 December 1995
Birthplace: Steubenville, Ohio
Best known as: Crooner, actor, and comedy partner to Jerry Lewis
Name at birth: Dino Crocetti Between 1949 and 1956, Dean Martin made 16 films as the singing straight man to his comedy partner Jerry Lewis; the two were one of the hottest entertainment acts of the era. After their bitter (and much-publicized) breakup, Martin continued making movies, including both comedy and dramatic roles and the spoofy Matt Helm spy movies of the 1960s. A nightclub singer and solid member of Frank Sinatra's "rat pack," Martin also had hit records, most notably "That's Amore" and "Everybody Loves Somebody." Martin's easygoing attitude helped make him a hit on television, where he hosted a comedy and variety show from 1965-74.
Extra credit: Martin's son Dean Paul (also known as Dino) was an actor, singer and sometime tennis pro; he died in a California Air National Guard plane crash in 1987. Editor's note: Many close friends say that the loss of his son was effectively the end of Martin's life,  even though he would live several more years, dining alone many nights  at the same la Famiglia restaurant in Beverly Hills.

ROY ORBISON Birthday ! (4-23) Retrospective,Tributes from Bruce, Neil Diamond,Wilburys and Elvis Surprise!

Beatles John and Ringo , along with Roy's first wife, Claudette (dark hair) celebrate Roy's 27th in UK 50 years ago today. Pictured below is one of Orbison's two sons who would later die in housefire in 1968.

Cheers on what would be his 77th birthday to the man, Roy Orbison, who Rolling Stone Magazine once wrote off as an 'insignificant' figure in rock and roll - that before all the big names schmoozed him on Black & White concert, etc on the big comeback (not that Roy had really ever gone away)!

Bruce Springsteen and 10,000 fans Sing Happy Birthday to Roy

'Pretty Woman,' Roy Orbison's blockbuster hit from 1964, here in a Spanish presentation combining Orbison's  first big national appearance, on Ed Sullivan in 1965, along with interspersed background scenes from the movie, 'Pretty Woman,' which would help Roy, even in death, continue his new found popularity. Producers of the movie had originally wanted a younger voice to sing the song, but Roy won out as nobody could sing it like Roy.

The eerily, beautiful video from the movie, Blue Velvet, 1986, which raised eyebrows for using Orbison's 'innocent, sweet song' In Dreams  in such a strange, violent movie, but
a key factor in propelling Orbison back into the spotlight in late Seventies and Eighties. It's the most popular Roy YouTube video with over 5 million viewings!   Today Orbison is the second most popular and top selling artist next to Elvis from the pre-Beatles rock and roll era (1955-63). As a barometor of today, his facebook page has over 600,000 fan 'likes'; by contrast, Jerry Lee Lewis , who is alive, has  130,000 .

ROY ORBISON still in the national spotlight witj one of many appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, lipsynching 'Oh Pretty Woman' before an enthusiasic throng of teenagers. Includes an interview, where Orbison talks about his upcoming movie.

And, here's Roy in a medley of songs and scenes from his only movie 'Fastest Guitar Alive,' beginning with an impressive flamenco presentation by Roy on 'Pistolero.' Other songs include 'Good Time Party,' and the beat balad, 'Whirlwind.'

With the Boston tragedy still on our minds, here's the associated song, Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline,' performed by Orbison in Australia in the 1970s

Orbison surprises Neil Diamond at a concert and sings 'Sung Song Blue ' together with Diamond and then performs 'Running Scared' solo (Pretty unusual for an artists to be brought on to sing
one of his own songs, unplanned, in someone else's concert !  (2-19-76)  )

There were so many things that helped cement the Roy Orbison Comeback, which effectively began the night of Elvis' passing, August 17, 1977 when Roy managed to perform without a dry eye in the sold out Santa Monica auditorium before over 10,000 folks.  Orbison hadn't been appearing much in the 1970s - an RV show in Cincinatti before 600 in 1976 was pretty typical .  This would be a springboard for Orbison, who would  continue  to perform  regularly now and appear on TV more than ever , but his appearance with his old and new found adoring music associates that came together in the 'Black and White Night' tribute performance at Los Angeles' Coconut Grove might have been the single biggest contributing factor to his 10 year long comeback that culminated with the Traveling Wilburys and Mystery Girl top five album.

Here Roy sings on an 'extra,' BLUE ANGEL -not included in the regular Black and White Night program footage that has been seen around the world thousands of times since first aired in 1987 on PBS TV. Backed by the likes of kd lang, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, James Burton and more, this is the tribute performance of all tributes, coming after Roy's Hall of Fame induction.

Orbison singing the Star Spangled Banner at a Los Angeles King hockey game, October 1988

ROY ORBISON on top of the Rock World again with new Top Ten song, ' You Got It ', here performing the song live at an awards reception in Holland shortly before his passing in 1988.
It was the lead song from his new, comeback solo album, 'Mystery Girl' . The song would reach number nine  on the charts and the album number five. Sadly , Orbison passed before the album
was released and this was the only live performance of an album cut.

Intimate back stage footage of Roy working on his last album, .  'Mystery Girl,'  including
footage of 'leftover' songs used on subsequent, posthumous LP, 'King of Hearts.' (West 57th)

More recent tributes, from Hollywood Walk of Fame presentation two years ago with Roy's wife , Barbara, and three living sons, Wesley, Alex, and Roy Kelton Jr, T Bone Burnett, Dan Akroid and others

And, now get read for a Big Surprise!
Ever wondered what Roy and Elvis might be doing today if they were still alive?
Well... here is it!
ELVIS PRESLEY and ROY ORBISON Together Again !  Amazing but true.   Elvis and Roy had long talked of doing a duet together. And, now, through   powers unbeknownst   to us... a dream
come true... the duet, 'Together Again.'

We are told through  mysterious sources  that Roy and Elvis want  to return to Earth for a project -  and this is their first effort from their proposed 'Where Spirits Fly'  .  We will hope to channel them again , soon, and let you know if and when we do
