MISSING FROM THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

Here is the front page of a music magazine published almost 20 year  ago, deriding the Rock Hall of Fame for overlooking key talents (clockwise, from top right GENE PITNEY, NEIL SEDAKA, DEL SHANNON, CONNIE FRANCIS, THE SHIRELLES and BRENDA LEE.  Since that time,  Pitney , Shannon, the Shirelles and Brenda Lee have finally been inducted, but , amazingly, Neil Sedaka - who had two separate careers, in the 60s and 70s - and Connie Francis , who is the second if not best -selling female singer of all time- are still left out of the Hall, along with many notable names like   Chubby Checker, Paul Anka, Jan and Dean, Mary Wells, The Ventures, Leslie Gore and most of the attached list (at left) and others you could probably think of...  It's always been an issue as to 'What is rock and roll? ', but if they're  now letting in rap artists and heavy metal, blues and country artists its high time they considered the pop-meisters. Afterall,  pop was the rock and roll in the 50s and 60s as was much of country music.  Many no longer take the Hall seriously once learning that it is run by the head of 'Rolling Stone' magazine, a publication that has hardly recognized any music prior to 1968, it's inception, with rare exception, i.e. the five or six 'pioneers' .  Early RS publications , for example , dismissed Roy Orbison as a lightweight who hid behind dark clothes and glasses - that is, until Orbison returned to fame in the 80s, playing with some of Rolling Stone's faves like Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan.  Unlike some of the sports hall of fames, which put some actual 'science' to the test in selected members, the Hall is largely a popularity contest of music writers and publishers, largely of younger age.   Prior to being inducted into the hall, the late great Gene Pitney once suggested they not keep nominating him every year but give his slot to a younger artist more likely to get in.  Same for Del Shannon, who some say was very depressed after being overlooked many times.  Since then, the Hall has become a joke, except to those who may have been inducted or prefer newer music to older.

From the above list, left, Neil Diamond was finally inducted as was Brenda Lee and the Shirelles along with the Righteous Brothers and Gene Pitney and Del Shannon, sadly, after he passed -  but that's about it. Still missing are two of the top three selling female artists of the 50s and 60s as well as two of the three top surf groups and the number singer of the number one dance hit and  the most dance tunes of anyone.

Here are some of the artists still missing from the Rock Hall of Fame, as posted in our Facebook sister site.... We put together a somewhat scientific breakdown of deserving artists, which we'll be adding here shortly...

Leslie Gore, peforming only a few months back , in January, but she won't be appearing August 1, as noted in this Facebook post - probably the other most deserving female besides Connie Francis NOT in that Rock Hall of Whatever...

And Leslie's friend, Lou Christie, is currently being promoted by his fan club for the Hall of fame.. Help them out, for what it's worth or the other Hall(s) noted elsewhere...

Dear Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Committee, We the undersigned, respectfully urge you to induct Lou Christie, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....

Chubby Checker Remembers Dick Clark

"We danced to the music that Dick Clark played," says Chubby Checker. "The king of the disc jockeys has died and, because of him, we will never be the same." In 2008, Billboard named Checker's iconic smash "The Twist" the No. 1 song of the Billboard Hot 100's first 50 years. The song remains the only title to have logged two separate runs to No. 1, reigning the week of Sept. 24, 1960, and again the weeks of Jan. 13 and 20, 1962, after the song - and its revolutionary dance - experienced a second wave of pop culture fanfare. Checker might never have recorded the song, however, had it not been for Clark. The original version by the song's writer, Hank Ballard, won praise on "American Bandstand," but when Ballard was unavailable to perform it on the show, Clark suggested that Checker cover it to expose it further to "Bandstand" viewers. How did Checker get such a career-making nod? "I had worked with Clark on a recording session of 'Jingle Bells,' singing the song through impressions of other acts of the time," Checker recalls.

Clark is, in fact, even not-so-indirectly responsible for Checker's famed recording name. "Clark's wife was in the studio when I was recording that holiday project," Checker remembers. "I'd  had the nickname Chubby since I was 11 years old, and I was doing a Fats Domino impression. Mrs. Clark said, 'His name is Chubby, like Fats?' Well, then, his last name should be Checker, like Domino'." Checker says that the reach of "Bandstand" and the dance that "The Twist" inspired combined to change music forever. "Before 'The Twist,' you danced in rhythm with the song. With 'The Twist,' suddenly you're dancing apart from the beat, and not with your girl. Now, you see a girl across the floor that you've never seen before, you're nodding your head, you're seeing her dance ... By the time the song is over … whew," Checker says, chuckling at the song's impact on not only the development of early rock & roll and dance, but perhaps also on relations between the sexes ever since. "'Bandstand was around before 'The Twist," Checker says, "but, it was Clark's suggestion for me to record the song that caused an explosion for both the show and my career." "Just think," marvels Checker, "the No. 1 song of all-time … all because of Dick Clark and 'American Bandstand'."

NEIL SEDAKA Going Strong at 74

We go from the classic Scopotone (first ever video?)  above (1962) to a recent appearance (2012) on the Mike Huckabee show where Neil Sedaka showcases his latest project, cover versions of his early hits with lyrics changed for kids (eg  'Waking Up is Hard to Do, Lunch Will Keep Us Together,' etc.)  Hear 'Lunch will Keep Us together' along with the original, Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.'   Here Neil's funny story about growing up wanting to be a rock and roll singer and what he did with his 45s. We've seen Sedaka dozens of times over the years and it is one of the few  events we still look forward to - when Sedaka comes to town. Catch him if he comes to your area. In the meantime check out his website, http://neilsedaka.com/   Last year Sedaka was in town, when Dad was still with us and a couple generations enjoyed him and his protege doing a concert of Neil Sedaka songs! (Sorry we don't remember the name of the protege).
