ROY ORBISON - REMEMBERING ROCK AND ROLL PIONEER ROY ORIBSON

Rare Roy Orbison: The MGM Years Box Set , 'Lost Album'

Released for Christmas on Anniversary of Passing

In 1965 Roy Orbison was riding high following the success of recent smash hits highlighted by his iconic “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Lured by a million dollar contract that included a film deal his label Monument couldn’t offer, Roy left Monument and signed with MGM Records.

The MGM deal contained an almost frenetic recording and release commitment, requiring Roy to commence recording three full albums, plus multiple singles for each album, EVERY YEAR. Roy delivered with both vigor and quality, with his output sometimes exceeding 70 recordings per year. This MGM Years box set is a summation of that marvelous work—13 full-length albums including the long sought-after The Fastest Guitar Alive soundtrack (Roy starred in the film) and a new collection of B-Sides & singles that have never before appeared on a full-length Roy Orbison album.

All 13 albums were transferred from the original multi-track tapes at famed Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and then mixed by GRAMMY -winning engineer Chuck Turner at the Johnny Cash Cabin, with help from Roy’s son, Alex Orbison. They were then remastered by longtime Roy Orbison friend and GRAMMY -winning engineer Richard Dodd. In order to make sure modern technology remained true to Roy’s original intent, we frequently compared our work to the original vinyl and its inherent warm sound.

This is some of Roy Orbison’s best, but also perhaps least known work—now all together for the first time. The MGM Years sound better than ever.

IN ADDITION, Roy Orbison's sons, who now run Orbison.com, have released a previously  unreleased MGM album in the process,' One of the Lonely Ones,'and that has been  just released on Dec 6 26th Anniversary of Roy Orbison's passing. Get the MGM box and unreleased album together at discount HERE

It's like Christmas getting new material from the late, great ROY ORBISON - and this one is the best ever. Dare find a better album/package out there today.

We started with the DVD, savoring the excellent commentary from 'Roy's Boys - who now run Orbison productions since the passing of their mother/Roy's wife, Barbara- and others including the aforementioned artists. This disc, alone, is 'worth the price of admission.' There's not weak song in the bunch. Each song has a story and most of the writers are here to tell what it was like working with Roy Orbison  on his greatest album, only months before he passed.Much of the writing and work took place in or near Roy's home in Malibu, California, overlooking the Pacific Ocean ,which contributed to the heavenly sounds

Amazon editorial review:
The discography of Roy Orbison (1936-1988) - which yielded some of the most heartfelt, passionate classics of the rock 'n' roll era - shined even brighter with the release of Mystery Girl, the last album Orbison recorded, in 1989. Now, a brand-new version of this star-studded classic further amplifies the beauty of Roy's final work.

The commercial success of Mystery Girl was nothing short of impressive: the album was a Top 5 hit, eventually earning Orbison his first platinum award for over 1 million sales, and featured the worldwide Top 10 smash You Got It. MYSTERY GIRL DELUXE 25th anniversary edition is packed with stunning extras. The original album is appended by nine unreleased bonus audio tracks, including studio demos and the previously unheard song The Way Is Love, based on a long-lost demo featuring new instrumentation from Orbison's children, Wesley, Roy Jr. and Alex, and John Carter Cash, son of Orbison's longtime friend Johnny Cash. The accompanying DVD features a new hour-long documentary on the making of the album, Mystery Girl: Unraveled, executive produced by Roy's sons. The documentary features new interviews with those behind the album including Steve Cropper, Tom Petty, Mick Campbell and Jeff Lynne. In addition to the documentary, the DVD includes eight wonderful music videos, including an unreleased alternate video for "She's a Mystery to Me" and three new videos for "The Way Is Love", "You Got It" and "California Blue."

ROY ORBISON LAST CONCERT 25 YEARS AGO -New Roy Orbison DVD

ROY ORBISON LAST CONCERT 25 YEARS AGO -New Roy Orbison DVD

Roy Orbison died of a heart attack at his mother’s home in Henderson, Tenn., 10 years after recovering from open heart surgery. He was just 52 when he died and making a major comeback as a solo act and as part of the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. He had given a concert Oct. 4 in Akron, Ohio two days before his death (his LAST CONCERT, NOW AVAILABLE ; days after he died, the Traveling Wilburys album reached No. 8 on the Billboard album chart and later went to Number One. Orbison's  own 'Mystery Girl' LP, which was released just after his passing, would go on to Number Five and it's lead single ' You Got It' would reach Top 10 singles, the first time in over 25 years that Orbison would achieve Top 10 status!

************** OLDIES NEW - BOOKS AND MORE

Orbison's comeback was probably the longest and biggest of anyone from the original Rock and Roll Era of the lates 50s and early 60s. It began, effectively on August 16, 1977, the day Elvis died. That night, Roy decided to go on stage because that is what he felt Elvis would have wanted him to do. The concert, at the Santa Monica (CA) auditorium drew about 15,000 fans; Orbison performed with tears in his eyes while paying tribute to his friend, Elvis, who had called Roy Orbison 'the best singer ever.' Here's' a song Roy would later record and perform in concert in tribute to his friend and Sun Records mate.

Live At Austin City Limits August 5. 1982 Hound Dog Man A Tribute To Elvis Presley.

Orbison continued making records after his initial fame began waning after the Beatles and
British  Like most original 'rockers,', Orbison was considered a 'has been'by the '70s,
performing before small crowds like the RV show near Cincinnatti, Ohio.on his birthday April 23, 1976.    Even Rolling Stone
Magazine had written him off as a nostalgia act , calling him a pasty-faced , black-suited performer who barely moves and never really contributed that much, , or words to that affect- until Roy struck gold in the '80s when the Eagles asked him to open concerts for them and younger artists began discovering, or re-discovering the 'other' man in black. Roy was asked to do a special concert at the vintage Coconut Grove theater in
Los Angeles that would be filmed in black and white, where old friends and new stars would perform along side Orbison; ' Black and White Night' . It would become his signature concert and continues to be shown on PBS and other
station. That was 1987, a year before we would lose Roy but Orbison had to have known by then that he was 'back, what with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the new darlings k.d. lang and Chris Isaac endorsing him to a whole new
generation of adoring fans.

A year earlier, movie producer David Lynch, used Roy's 'innocent little song' IN DREAMS as Orbison would later explain in a violent, controversial movie. Despite the subject matter, the song came with eerie backing and added to Orbison's already image of mystery (Orbison's quietness and even shyness was often misconstrued for reclusiveness but he actually gave many interviews, especially with his new found popularity

in the '80s. Orbison even made a movie, 'Fastest Guitar Alive,' in 1966, which was a light cowboy meets musical . Maybe not a blockbuster, but the movie soundtrack provided a dozen more fine tunes from Roy like this one. Here's 'Whirlwind' with Orbison singing and acting

Today, Roy Orbison music continues to sell well and is the second biggest selling 'original rock and roller'next to Elvis. His sons, Roy Kelton, Alex and perhaps Wesley, the oldest, from his first marriage to Claudette, keep fans up to date with re-issues and other news - you'd be surprised how much posthumous info one can generate, expecially Orbison - with an excellent website, www.Orbison.com Here's a 'leftover' from the Mystery Girl album, 'Love In Time.' Pretty good leftover we'd say. It was on the 'Heart of Roy Orbison,' a short-lived album that followed Mystery Girl with a lot of fine demos to which backing was added. This 'video,'if you will, was produced somewhere along the way; we only saw it now for the first
in the '80s.

Another reason Roy Orbison took on the reclusive, 'lonely' man of mysetery image is because he did suffer great tragedy. He lost his first wife, Claudette, in a motorcycle accident in 1966 and his first two boys in a house fire near Nashville in 1968,more than enough tragedy for a lifetime in two years . After the second tragedy Orbison holed up for a week in a dark room by himself. But, by the end of the year he was out touring again and met his new wife, Barbara, in Leeds. It was with her help that Roy was able to mount the monumental comeback.Barbara, herself, passed away last year, after 'keeping the torch burning'for Roy since his death, and now the boys carry on. Let's close our 25 th year mini-tribute to the great Roy Orbison with his only christmas song, 'Pretty Paper.' He did not write this one; that job belonged to none other than Willie Nelson.

We've played mostly Roy's signature ballads, but he did a lot of fine upbeat tunes, too, like
'Pretty Woman,' which is interesting because it has ballad qualities with an upbeat.
Here's Roy with Bruce, Elvis Costello and friends from that Black and White Night concert
with an 'enhanced' version of Pretty woman.

Georgia man recalls recording legendary singer-songwriter Roy Orbison

Aztec man recalls recording legendary singer-songwriter Roy Orbison

By James Fenton The Daily Times

AZTEC — As a teen in the early '60s, Jake Hottell cast a wish that he would one day meet legendary singer-songwriter Roy Orbison.
A little more than a decade later, he met The Big O.
Hottell, 67, served in Korea as an Army electronics engineer and recorded Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis in Nashville, Tenn. Now he runs his own recording label and publishing company in Aztec. When he is not busy promoting healthy eating at area schools, he plays duets on the guitar with his wife.

In high school, Hottell played rock 'n' roll and was a big fan of Orbison, Buck Owens and Hank Williams. He had a rock band that practiced in his mother's Aztec flower shop.
"We were sitting in the flower shop, and I said, 'I know that if we could meet Roy Orbison, he would help us make it,'" said Hottell, who graduated Aztec High School in 1965. "And isn't it amazing that I ended up working for Roy Orbison? I didn't even know he was in Nashville."
Hottell landed a big break when he began work as head engineer at Orbison's Nashville studio.
It was there he engineered Orbison's country-inflected, back-to-roots 1970s album, "I'm Still in Love with You."

He recorded many others, including Jessi Coulter (Waylon Jennings' wife), the Statler Brothers (backing vocal group for Johnny Cash) and Latin American country star Johnny Rodriguez.
But it was his affiliation with Orbison, the legendary singer behind the dark shades whose baritone voice fueled songs of regret and dreams, that clearly meant the most.
Orbison, known for his demanding studio preferences, especially his dislike of track overdubbing. The album Hottell recorded for Orbison involved more than 30 musicians -- Orbison, band and orchestra section
-- all at once.

"That was an extremely demanding session for the engineer, trying to have everything work for all those musicians in a single take," Hottell said.
He became friends with Orbison and his family, but it was the music that Hottell said was really was special.
"One day I got the chance to drive over to Orbison's four-story mansion, next door Johnny Cash's, just outside Nashville," he said. "He and I went into his writing room and for the entire day, we wrote songs together."
No songs from that day resulted in a chart-busting hit, but Hottell cherishes the experience, despite the challenges.
"I would work over 100 hours each week at the studio, in that smoke-filled control room," he said. "I didn't drink or do drugs, but a lot of folks did. They're all dead now."
After years working behind the recording console, Hottell is committed to promoting greater health.
"I had a number of inoculations from the Army and worked in a factory that produced the 'selective weed killer,' known as Agent Orange," he said. "By the time I was 36, I had bad rashes and acid burns on my face and arms. I had daily migraines. My liver was in bad shape."

ROY ORBISON Birthday ! (4-23) Retrospective,Tributes from Bruce, Neil Diamond,Wilburys and Elvis Surprise!

Beatles John and Ringo , along with Roy's first wife, Claudette (dark hair) celebrate Roy's 27th in UK 50 years ago today. Pictured below is one of Orbison's two sons who would later die in housefire in 1968.

Cheers on what would be his 77th birthday to the man, Roy Orbison, who Rolling Stone Magazine once wrote off as an 'insignificant' figure in rock and roll - that before all the big names schmoozed him on Black & White concert, etc on the big comeback (not that Roy had really ever gone away)!

Bruce Springsteen and 10,000 fans Sing Happy Birthday to Roy

'Pretty Woman,' Roy Orbison's blockbuster hit from 1964, here in a Spanish presentation combining Orbison's  first big national appearance, on Ed Sullivan in 1965, along with interspersed background scenes from the movie, 'Pretty Woman,' which would help Roy, even in death, continue his new found popularity. Producers of the movie had originally wanted a younger voice to sing the song, but Roy won out as nobody could sing it like Roy.

The eerily, beautiful video from the movie, Blue Velvet, 1986, which raised eyebrows for using Orbison's 'innocent, sweet song' In Dreams  in such a strange, violent movie, but
a key factor in propelling Orbison back into the spotlight in late Seventies and Eighties. It's the most popular Roy YouTube video with over 5 million viewings!   Today Orbison is the second most popular and top selling artist next to Elvis from the pre-Beatles rock and roll era (1955-63). As a barometor of today, his facebook page has over 600,000 fan 'likes'; by contrast, Jerry Lee Lewis , who is alive, has  130,000 .

ROY ORBISON still in the national spotlight witj one of many appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, lipsynching 'Oh Pretty Woman' before an enthusiasic throng of teenagers. Includes an interview, where Orbison talks about his upcoming movie.

And, here's Roy in a medley of songs and scenes from his only movie 'Fastest Guitar Alive,' beginning with an impressive flamenco presentation by Roy on 'Pistolero.' Other songs include 'Good Time Party,' and the beat balad, 'Whirlwind.'

With the Boston tragedy still on our minds, here's the associated song, Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline,' performed by Orbison in Australia in the 1970s

Orbison surprises Neil Diamond at a concert and sings 'Sung Song Blue ' together with Diamond and then performs 'Running Scared' solo (Pretty unusual for an artists to be brought on to sing
one of his own songs, unplanned, in someone else's concert !  (2-19-76)  )

There were so many things that helped cement the Roy Orbison Comeback, which effectively began the night of Elvis' passing, August 17, 1977 when Roy managed to perform without a dry eye in the sold out Santa Monica auditorium before over 10,000 folks.  Orbison hadn't been appearing much in the 1970s - an RV show in Cincinatti before 600 in 1976 was pretty typical .  This would be a springboard for Orbison, who would  continue  to perform  regularly now and appear on TV more than ever , but his appearance with his old and new found adoring music associates that came together in the 'Black and White Night' tribute performance at Los Angeles' Coconut Grove might have been the single biggest contributing factor to his 10 year long comeback that culminated with the Traveling Wilburys and Mystery Girl top five album.

Here Roy sings on an 'extra,' BLUE ANGEL -not included in the regular Black and White Night program footage that has been seen around the world thousands of times since first aired in 1987 on PBS TV. Backed by the likes of kd lang, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, James Burton and more, this is the tribute performance of all tributes, coming after Roy's Hall of Fame induction.

ROY ORBISON on top of the Rock World again with new Top Ten song, ' You Got It ', here performing the song live at an awards reception in Holland shortly before his passing in 1988.
It was the lead song from his new, comeback solo album, 'Mystery Girl' . The song would reach number nine  on the charts and the album number five. Sadly , Orbison passed before the album
was released and this was the only live performance of an album cut.
