Dean Martin

Singer / Actor
Born: 7 June 1917
Died: 25 December 1995
Birthplace: Steubenville, Ohio
Best known as: Crooner, actor, and comedy partner to Jerry Lewis
Name at birth: Dino Crocetti Between 1949 and 1956, Dean Martin made 16 films as the singing straight man to his comedy partner Jerry Lewis; the two were one of the hottest entertainment acts of the era. After their bitter (and much-publicized) breakup, Martin continued making movies, including both comedy and dramatic roles and the spoofy Matt Helm spy movies of the 1960s. A nightclub singer and solid member of Frank Sinatra's "rat pack," Martin also had hit records, most notably "That's Amore" and "Everybody Loves Somebody." Martin's easygoing attitude helped make him a hit on television, where he hosted a comedy and variety show from 1965-74.
Extra credit: Martin's son Dean Paul (also known as Dino) was an actor, singer and sometime tennis pro; he died in a California Air National Guard plane crash in 1987. Editor's note: Many close friends say that the loss of his son was effectively the end of Martin's life,  even though he would live several more years, dining alone many nights  at the same la Famiglia restaurant in Beverly Hills.

Original Bass Player, Marshall Lytle, of Bill Haley's Comets Passes

Marshall Lytle Associated Press May 29, 2013, 8:15 p.m.

Marshall Lytle, the original bass player for Bill Haley & His Comets, one of the first bands to take rock 'n' roll music mainstream, has died. He was 79.

Lytle died Saturday at his home in New Port Richey, Fla., said his niece, Shayna Golda. He was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. With Lytle on bass, Haley and the Comets recorded hits like"Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in the 1950s. Lytle was known for his percussive bass style, slapping the strings as he played.
1956 video from movie captures the spirit of the day, as Rock and Roll was coming into its own, to the disapproval of the older generation. Marshall Lytle is playing bass at left

Lytle was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Old Fort, N.C. A birth defect made it nearly impossible for him to walk as a child. His older brother would carry him to and from school on his back. While Lytle was still a young boy, he had surgery that gave him the use of his legs, his niece said.

In 1951, Lytle, then still a teen, joined Bill Haley's Saddlemen. At the time, Haley had a radio show in Chester, Pa., and the manager commented that the group didn't look like saddlemen, said Michael Jordan Rush, who published a memoir by Lytle titled "Still Rockin' Around the Clock" in 2011. He suggested they call themselves "The Comets" instead. Several of the band's hits are now iconic rock 'n' roll songs: "Rock Around the Clock," recorded in 1954, is one of the highest-selling singles of all time. Lytle also played on hits like "See You Later, Alligator." But he and two other members of the band quit in 1955 over a money dispute and formed a new group called the Jodimars. The group had limited commercial success, and Lytle temporarily changed his name and later went into real estate. He returned to music in 1987, playing in a Comets reunion band, and performed right up until the weeks before his death, Rush said. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with other members of the Comets in 2012. Haley died in 1981.
Lytle's survivors include his girlfriend, Cathy Smith, seven children and two siblings.

Editor's Note:  The Comets were performing until recently with most of their original members. Of course, Bill Haley, their leader , passed years ago, but the others were pretty amazing, delighting audiences including this writer with all members well into their 70s and 80s.  So, now, we are seeing the beginning of the eventual demise of the talented group. They even recorded a album with a new song, ' We Ain't Dead Yet.'

George Jones and Gene Pitney Unlikely Pairing

Interesting angle on George Jones passing... 'the world's greatest country singer.' George just happened to record at the same record label, Musicor, as Gene Pitney,   rock and roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter but who really defied categorization. What seemed like an unlikely pairing recorded over 20 songs and an album together... and it worked... witnessed by this sampling. George called Gene his younger, 'little friend,' and ironically the hard-living Jones outlived Gene by 15 years. More @ http://oldiescountry.blogspot.com/

MORE ON GEORGE JONES... ARTIST PAY TRIBUTE TO
'WORLD'S GREATEST COUNTRY SINGER'...

By Matthew Diebel, NBC News
Opinion: Johnny Cash had a stock answer to that oft-asked question, “Who is your favorite singer?” “You mean,” he teased, “apart from George Jones?”
Yes, there’s pretty much universal agreement among country singers that Jones, who died Friday at age 81, was the greatest of all time. From the oldies – Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard – to the relative newbies – Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis – all were of one mind.

GEORGE JONES FUNERAL WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC...
'That's the way he would have wanted it,' says wife Nancy....
from Grand Ole Opry May Thursday May 2
******************************
Vince Gill: ”There aren’t words in our language to describe the depth of his greatness. I’ll miss my kind and generous friend.”
Garth Brooks: ”The greatest voice to ever grace country music will never die. Jones has a place in every heart that ever loved any kind of music.”
Alan Jackson: “Well, heaven better get ready for some great country music. While George was known for his wild and crazy days, I’ve known him for 25 years as a friend. He had grown into a real good man. Of course, he will always be the greatest singer and interpreter of real country music – there’ll never be another. Like the song says, ‘You know this old world is full of singers, but just a few are chosen to tear your heart out when they sing. Imagine life without them…Who’s gonna fill their shoes.’”
Hank Williams Jr.: “Today is a sad day in Country music. We have lost another piece of history. George Jones was not only a good singer, but was a good friend. He will be missed by many.”
Merle Haggard: ”The world has lost the greatest country singer of all time. Amen.”

Legendary KABL , KYA Radio Live On Starring Legendary Bill Moen, Gary Mora - K

Legendary KABL Radio Lives On Starring Legendary Bill Moen
http://KABL960.com     https://www.facebook.com/KABL960

It's nice to see some of my past is still around. Was pleased to see Bill Moen's letter to the editor in San Francicsco Chronicle     the other day....  Moen was the lead broadcaster / DJ / Announcer on San Francisco-Oakland's KABL 'MOR' (middle of road) radio during the 'Golden Era' 1950s-60s right on up to not that many years ago when the station was, unceremoniously,  sold / changed - and never replaced (How could it be?)... So, what did Moen do but put his new digital  technical skills to work and keep the station on the air at KABL960.com. Give a listen! You'll be glad you did...

Funny , growing up as a kid I didn't appreciate this kind of music as I do now..  Great variety, from big band to '50s crooners to even some of the better later music - and lots of Moen humor and trivia thrown in.... Didn't realize KABL was broadcast out of the legendary Cliff House Restaurant at Land's End, overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean (next to the old Sutro Bath House!  )

We'll be doing some more features on KABL and Bill, I'm sure, in the future... San Francisco - Oakland had so many great stations during THE ERA... KSFO, KEWB, KYA, KDIA, KOBY along with KABL with legendary DJs or broadcasters like Don Sherwood, Russ The Moose Syracuse, Al Jazzbeau Collins, Bobby Dale, Gene Nelson, Tommy Saunders, Jumpin George Oxford, Roscoe, Big Daddy Tom Donahue -and many more.. Even legendary Gary Owens and Kasey Kasem (who celebrated a birthday recently) came through town (KEWB)  for a 'cup of coffee,' as they say.  KYA , we're happy to say, still LIVES much like Moen's KABL. You can listen to it here thanks to long time KYA DJ Gary Mora .  Gary's got some nice
airchecks linked from the San Francisco Radio Museum so you can listen to your favorites again ...
