ELVIS' CARS
Elvis' 1955 pink cadillac

ELVIS' '56 El Dorado Cadillac
Elvis and June Juanico flew to Houston to purchase this car on June 12, 1956 at a cost of $10,000. Originally white with a black interior, Elvis squashed a handful of grapes on the fender and told the customiser, Jimmy Sanders of Memphis (who also customised the pink '55 Fleetwood), that was the colour he wanted. The upholstery was changed to white roll and pleated leather, and the floor covered in mouton fur dyed purple. Elvis' initials 'EP' entwined with a guitar and two musical notes inscribed in leather adorned the floor mats and overhead. Elvis traded it in on December 23rd 1957. - See more at: http://www.elvis.com.au/presley/elvis_presleys_cars.shtml#sthash.HAWqUmRo.dpuf

...and there were many other cars of Elvis including a 1960 Lincln Continental, special Fleetwood 1960 Cadillac used in Viva Las Vegas and this Rolls Royce

On August 16, 1977 , the day Elvis passed, friend and Sun mate Roy Orbison, with tears in his eyes, performed at the Santa Monica Auditorium near Los Angeles before a sold out crowd of around 15,000. It was said to be one of the best and emotional shows ever. Orbison considered cancelling after the loss of his good friend, but glad he went on as it, effecctively, kicked off his 10-year comeback (1977-1988). After the show, Some Hollywood moguls in the audience encouraged Orbison to step up his touring and recording, which he did . So, Roy can thank Elvis, in death, for really giving him the desire to continue, in effect , carrying on for the King. Who knows if the connections would have happened otherwise. . Aicture is believed to be the only one with Roy and Elvis taken together, even though they were good friends and Elvis called Roy the best singer ever.

Nice tribute to the Starlets who really were Stars in the day... many who worked and were friends with Elvis

Elvis' seldom heard 1973 song, 'I Miss You'... Elvis did not write the song but the lyrics could pertain to his life and love(s)

This live version of 'Are You Lonesome' always makes us laugh... even though it came during Elvis' rough last years it was good to see him laugh, too... Elvis was a very funny guy and not too proud to mess up a rather sacred song

‘Sinatra 100: An 'All-Star' GRAMMY Concert’ Shows Frank Sinatra’s Not So All-Star

‘Sinatra 100: An 'All-Star' GRAMMY Concert’  Not So All-Star

Sinatra 100: An All-Star GRAMMY Concert
Good for the Times But Could Have Served Old Blue Eyes Better

Last night's TV (CBS) tribute to the greatest pop singer in American history on the occasion of his 100th birthday was at least better than 99% of other such musical tributes you see today on TV - because there aren't any (unless you include those occasional ones on PBS or cable. But, if it were 'in the era' the special would have failed.Musically, there were perhaps a half dozen memorable performances during the two hour show. What a waste of a great big band! From the MC (American Family's Seth McFarlane -who happens to have a good voice but that's about it - to the tribute performers to the song selections, the powers that be at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, where the Dec 6 tribute was held , got it all wrong. If the performer was good his or her song selection was usually poor; if the song bad, the artist was usually better, but it was mostly the former , as Sinatra didn't record many bad songs.Lots of young artists that didn't belong there (think Cool J, Usher, country Garth Brooks , Zac Brown, Carrie Underwood, etc. ) and a lot of veterans -and Sinatra family- who were left out.  Let's let Brian Ives give his more unbiased, mainstream opinion...from radio.com:

By Brian Ives

...seemed like a TV event out of time; ever since TV execs got Twitter accounts and learned what “trending” meant, televised music programs have seemed designed to appeal to social media, both in the pacing of shows and in the selection of artists invited to play them.
Wisely, the producers of the all-star Frank Sinatra tribute, which aired last night on CBS, decided to stick more with the spirit of Frank, instead of trying to cater to the zeitgeist.  Still, the concert showed how Ol’ Blue Eyes’ influence permeates music in 2015. (Note: Radio.com is owned by CBS).
Photo Gallery: Lady Gaga, Usher, Seth McFarlane Perform at Sinatra 100
Harry Connick Jr., Celine Dion and Tony Bennett were obvious choices; they are all familiar to most of Sinatra’s older fan base. But younger singers like John Legend, Usher, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Nick Jonas all clearly owe the Chairman of the Board a debt.
By now, we know that Lady Gaga is a huge fan of the American Songbook via her collaborations with Tony Bennett. So even if her next album is a collaboration with Iron Maiden, it’s clear that Sinatra’s influence lives on in her voice. She brought some major showmanship to the concert via her performance of “Theme from ‘New York, New York.'”
We also know that — somewhat surprisingly — Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane is a huge Sinatra fan. What was more surprising is how good he is at paying tribute to the man. His performance of “One For My Baby (And One More The Road)” was one of the highlights of the show.
Sinatra’s influence on country music that may not be as well known as his influence on pop and R&B, however it was on full display at this show, which saw Zac Brown, Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood putting their spins on his classics.

ROY ORBISON - REMEMBERING ROCK AND ROLL PIONEER ROY ORIBSON

Remembering Roy Orbison 26 years later... here with a rare, unreleased performance of the great 1961 hit 'Blue Angel' , an extra from the Black and White Night 1987 Orbison tribute http://youtu.be/AnmZ932gszo  and a PAIR OF NEW RELEASES, MGM Box and previously unleased LP from the late '60s MGM years , and , if available    , a double tribute to Roy and his songwriting partner Bill Dees and Oh Pretty Woman... for more http://www.OldiesCountry.com/   AND http://www.facebook.com/jack.benny.9699

Rare Roy Orbison: The MGM Years Box Set , 'Lost Album'

Released for Christmas on Anniversary of Passing

In 1965 Roy Orbison was riding high following the success of recent smash hits highlighted by his iconic “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Lured by a million dollar contract that included a film deal his label Monument couldn’t offer, Roy left Monument and signed with MGM Records.

The MGM deal contained an almost frenetic recording and release commitment, requiring Roy to commence recording three full albums, plus multiple singles for each album, EVERY YEAR. Roy delivered with both vigor and quality, with his output sometimes exceeding 70 recordings per year. This MGM Years box set is a summation of that marvelous work—13 full-length albums including the long sought-after The Fastest Guitar Alive soundtrack (Roy starred in the film) and a new collection of B-Sides & singles that have never before appeared on a full-length Roy Orbison album.

All 13 albums were transferred from the original multi-track tapes at famed Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and then mixed by GRAMMY -winning engineer Chuck Turner at the Johnny Cash Cabin, with help from Roy’s son, Alex Orbison. They were then remastered by longtime Roy Orbison friend and GRAMMY -winning engineer Richard Dodd. In order to make sure modern technology remained true to Roy’s original intent, we frequently compared our work to the original vinyl and its inherent warm sound.

This is some of Roy Orbison’s best, but also perhaps least known work—now all together for the first time. The MGM Years sound better than ever.

IN ADDITION, Roy Orbison's sons, who now run Orbison.com, have released a previously  unreleased MGM album in the process,' One of the Lonely Ones,'and that has been  just released on Dec 6 26th Anniversary of Roy Orbison's passing. Get the MGM box and unreleased album together at discount HERE

We're doing our weekly HOMETOWN COUNTDOWN here in Oldies Country, this week featuring the great WKW, St. Louis for this week in 1959.

We're up to number 32 where Kitty Kalen is keeping her same spot from last week with 'If I Gave My Heart To You.' But before we go on let's hear an extra from this week from a group you'd never expect to make the Pop Charts, but then, again, that's why music during the Golden Era '50s and '60s is so interesting... you've got a little bit of everything. And here's that group, the MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR - no foolin' - with 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' https://youtu.be/vlAbqeQ7qE8

COMING UP #31 If you're enjoying our new countdown show please give our page a LIKE (at the top) and tell your friends... We try to do it most Saturday nights. By the way have you noticed how music changed drastically from the 50s and 60s to, say , the 1980s, and since then while there've been great advances in technology and all music hasn't changed much since then - which doesn't say a lot... Sorry for the aside... We're back in business now with the No 31 song on WKW's Hot 38 with 'Smokie Part 2' from Bill Black'sCombo... and here's a treat..the video footage of the group performing the song in a 1961 movie 'TEENAGE MILLIONAIRE'https://youtu.be/Lm_xBHCtubM

Speaking of Dinah Washington did you know that she did a nice ballad written by Neil Sedaka, purportedly in 1959, that never saw the light of day, to our knowledge, until it appeared on a compilation album in 1989, And, here it is , a Countdown Extra, 'Never Again'https://youtu.be/ojD0AinQDo0

HOMETOWN COUNTDOWN #30 NEXT UP - Rock and Roll is softening a bit with the fade of pioneer rockers like Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis and the loss of Buddy Holly in Feb. plane crash. But some very beautiful 'standards' like this #30 song from Dinah Washingon

Unforgettable is a popular song written by Irving Gordon. The song's original working title was Uncomparable. The music publishing company…

Perhaps a regional hit... We talked about Buddy Holly and how his tragic loss earlier this year (1959) has left a void along with the legal problems and resutlting quietude from upbeat rockers Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry, not to mention Elvis' musical sabatical in the Army. But Holly was already softening his tune with beautiful ballads like this one, that somehow escaped the U.S. charts last year (1958) or ever, 'True Love Ways' - probably because it only came out, on an album, in Marcy of 1959 after Holly's passing -https://youtu.be/QjFRHIhSvwc

That was #26 for Bill Haley and his sax man in front and now for #25 we've got an unual situation. Two different Versions of the same song, a little instrumental thing called THE HUNCH, one by Paul Gayten and the other by Bobby Peterson. But, let's listen now to #24, an instrumental from Santo and Johnny called 'Teardrop.' https://youtu.be/yhaReVCrS_8

Back to the survey #28, down one notch for Ray Smith, telling us 'That s' All Right,.'not to be confused with the earlier Bo Diddley tune, 'She's Alright. #27 is Tony Fisher's big ballad, replete with phaser, 'The Big Hurt' and #26 is a new one from Bill Haley and his Comets, an instrumental called 'Joey's Song, no doubt named for Comet sax player Joey D'Ambrosio who solo's here.

Charted at #46 on Billboard Hot 100 in October 1959. The Comets were nearing the end of their chart career by the time this song charted. Original…
